For a long while now, I’ve been threatening to do a front yard flower bed makeover. It was time to get rid of the weed and ant-infested paving stones along the front of the house and replace them with something more 'aesthetically pleasing’, to this eye, anyway.
When I mentioned my plans to my girlfriend one morning after our weekly walk, she looked at the area thoughtfully and said, “Let’s do it. Now!”. So, 9 a.m. on a sunny morning last week, we began pulling up the pavers and raking the dirt into shape. We pulled them up, we hauled them to the side of the house via the old wheelbarrow, we stacked them nicely, and we sweated! After 2 hours what had once been full of this:
Looked like this:
Now I was really motivated. We chose a date the following week to continue on with our plans.
Then Dave, seeing that I was indeed serious about this change, volunteered to get the lava rock with the truck that weekend. Perfect!
So, last Sunday afternoon, I decided to tackle this project singlehandedly, since Dave was in the middle of building the pool fence in the backyard. After all, this was MY project. Truthfully, he hadn’t wanted me to start it until all the other projects were completed. But when something’s gotta be done, it’s gotta be done. And that front yard needed an overhaul NOW.
Oh, I forgot to mention, two days before, I had coffee with a friend who has a green thumb (of which I do not profess to have, but I can learn a few things from horticultural masters) and she guided me to the plants that would work on that side of the house. So, I purchased 3 daylilies, and with the potted annuals I already had, I decided that was plenty to begin with.
One wheelbarrow load of lava rock at a time, this little area, which was such an eyesore for much too long, has become something rather pleasing. Once the edging is done, it will be complete!
I know with an older home, the projects are never-ending. But for now, just for today, I am going to enjoy the changes.
