Fine

Fine is an odd word, really. Repeat it three times and it becomes even weirder.

Why is that fine really doesn’t really mean fine most of the time?

Did you know the word ‘fine’  is derived from the  Latin word ‘finis’ which means ‘end’?. As in ‘complete, free from impurities, supreme degree’?  I think this implies it’s as good as it can get. The ultimate.

Is that what we mean when we say ‘I’m fine’?

How are you? Fine *sniffle*.

How old are those leftovers? They’re FINE! Really!

Do these pants make me look fat?  They’re fine, now let’s go. We’re late.

I think the meaning has definitely changed  to mean ‘satisfactory’.  If we’re REALLY fine, we usually say ‘awesome, super, fantastic, never been better, etc..’

Fine is just fine.

And I guess I’m fine with that.
