Memory Lane

The author Brian Jacques died this past week.

Remember Redwall books? Well, if you have boys, and you encouraged them to read, I think there would have been at least one of the series of Redwall books in your home somewhere at sometime.

It brings back memories of kids sprawled on the couch, reading. I think there were a few animated videos of the tales to enjoy as well.

The bad animals vs the good animals. Rats, mice, badgers, otters, and other interesting creatures.  Protecting the Abbey. Lots of  weapons, fighting, armies, schemes, plans to overthrow and that sort of thing.

I’m only sort of guessing here because I never did read one of them. I didn’t have to. These were the type of books kids would choose to read on their own. Especially boys.

The boys always loved to play with ‘weapons’, be they sticks, nerf guns, super soakers, or machine guns  they and their pals crafted for the WW2 movies they made together. It brings back memories of an army of  boys playing Nerf Wars for hours on end in our little basement.

I’m sure Redwall fueled their imagination at some point.

I’m thankful for writers like Brian Jacques. May he rest in peace.

  1. We heard about this last night, and are so sad about it today. Everyone in our house is aware of Mr. Jacques' death now except our 14yearold son, who will grieve the most. Jacques is his favorite writer, and he's been looking forward to a new Redwall book for ages.

We saw him at a book signing years back and I'll always remember how sweet and friendly he was to me and the boys.

Thanks for posting this. We do love him so.

  2. This is so sad. Rebekah was the one in our family who especially loved his books. I think it was his descriptions of food that drew her in rather than the fighting!

  4. That is sad...the boys weren't the only ones to enjoy those books! I loved them! They were the the kind of books that kept you turning pages.
I was just telling Mike the other day that someone should make a digitally animated movie of them. There is a cheesy cartoon tv series, but it didn't quite do the books justice.
