Litfuse Book Review: An Unlikely Blessing

Unlikely

An Unlikely Blessing by Judy Baer is a charming story about the joys and challenges a new pastor  faces in a small farming community in North Dakota. A former city dweller, Alex Armstrong  is busy adjusting to his new role and to living in the country. He is attempting to meet the needs of his parishioners and the surrounding community, in charge of two sister churches, each very different from and a little wary of each other,   In addition,  the bachelor pastor, recently dumped by his fiancee,  is supplied with a steady stream of desserts and casseroles from the the single women in the Hilltop community, each hoping to capture his heart. This brings a bit of lightheartedness to the story. The characters in the story are varied and interesting.  Because this is the first book in a series, I’m sure many of them  and their situations will be revisited down the road.

I  found this an engaging read not so much because of the plot (slightly predictable and simplistic at times) , but because of the cultural information strewn throughout the book. It’s obvious that the author of this book knows first hand of what she is writing about- Scandinavian culture and food! I will definitely be trying out a few of the recipes interspersed in the pages of this story. Anyone of Swedish or Norwegian heritage will definitely enjoy this story.

If you are looking for a quick, heartwarming read, this book will not disappoint.

I received An Unlikely Blessing as a complimentary gift from Litfuse Publicity Group in exchange for a review.
