Sounds so appealing, doesn’t it? Is it attainable? I look at the flyers filling my mailbox these days, and it makes me wonder.
At this time of the year, suddenly everyone needs something they don’t already have (me included). But the truth is, very few of us in this culture really NEED anything (that is advertised in a flyer, anyway). There’s something crazy about looking through advertisements, trying to think up a list of items we would be happy to own.
Gift giving is good. I LOVE giving gifts, but I detest traipsing through umpteen number of stores, searching for gifts, hoping I’ll come across something, when I have no clue what people want and know that there is nothing they really need. On the other hand, I get excited when I’ve thought of something they will really appreciate but not expect. Actually, I prefer to give gifts all year long, especially when people least expect it.
So, I’ve decided to keep it simple this Christmas.. well, I’m certainly going to try.
I came across this pledge from the Farmer’s Almanac blog to help keep Christmas simple and meaningful, and relatively stress free:
Believing in the simplicity and beauty of Christmas, I commit myself to the following:
1. To remember those people who truly need my gifts.
2. To express my love to family and friends in more direct ways than presents.
3. To rededicate myself to the spiritual growth of my family.
4. To examine my activities in light of the true spirit of Christmas.
5. To initiate one act of peacemaking within my circle of family and friends.
Whoever wrote that had his/her focus right. Sounds like it could be a challenge, though.
So, how do YOU keep the Christmas season from spiraling out of control?
