God has a unique design and calling for every person, but how do we know what it is and where can we go for guidance? This book The Life Ready Woman by Shaunti Feldhahn and Robert Lewis has been written to empower women to be “women who are clear about their lives, bold in their faith, able to find God’s best”. This is life coaching in a book, which includes ways to avoid major mistakes and lifelong disappointments. It’s goal is to help women make right decisions. This is a book for every woman who is open to hearing what the Word of God says about being a woman in today’s world in all stages of life. In a world with so many options for women, God’s Word is the compass to follow.
Let me start by saying that I really enjoyed this book for several reasons. It was very Bible-based, which means for the most part, it wasn’t someone’s opinion about how a woman should live her life. The authors use scriptures to lead women to understand God’s plan for all people, and specifically women. Secondly, it was full of examples of real women and how they worked through issues to live their life in line with God’s word. There are often difficult issues to work through and this book did not shy away from them. Thirdly, Shaunti Feldhaun was transparent and shared often about her own struggles in areas of following God’s way vs the world’s values. All good stuff.
The first half of the book deals with struggles that women have in our culture, the biblical definition of manhood and womanhood, and the callings we have – core callings (as human beings), feminine callings (unique to women), and personal callings (dependent on personality, abilities, gifts, etc.) The information presented was excellent, especially the explanation on how the Fall affected men and women. As well, the thoughts presented on what a ‘biblical family’ looks like was food for thought. God’s word applies to all people and all cultures, so is the ‘stay-at-home mom and off-to-work dad the biblical model to follow? Read the ideas presented and judge for yourself. Worth thinking about!
Part 2 of this book deals with finding God’s best in the seasons of life a woman may go through: single, married, with young children, adult children, empty nesters, or a unique combination. Practical, with simple reflective exercises included.
I found that perhaps the authors dealing with those who find themselves single when they’d rather be married was a little weak. How do you know you are called to singleness? This was not answered, and may leave those in that situation wondering if they should be preparing for marriage throughout their life, anyway. This section also does not address living with chronic illness or disease and how this affects a woman’s decisions in life and how she can live out her core callings. I also wondered what a woman does when her personal callings don’t mesh with her husband’s? I also felt the authors assumed that every woman leads and desires a busy life more than one that is quiet and home-focused, which we know is not true. But maybe that was just me. But these are minor quibbles.
The authors strongly focused on not letting culture dictate our decision making, but always keeping our eyes focused on God’s way (i.e. importance of marriage, understanding our men, our high calling as parents, facing our fears, living with the end in mind ).
This is a great book for any woman to read at ANY stage of her life. I wished I had had this book with I was twenty! It’s got some GREAT advice for young women today. You may not agree with everything in the book, but I believe it is solid, Bible based advice that is worth listening to.
I could say a lot more about this book, but it would be better if you would read it for yourself. And I’m happy to say that Litfuse has generously sent me 2 copies of this book, one to keep and one to GIVE AWAY!
