Trying to decide which books to take along on my holiday was difficult. I decided to take only fiction, which would give me a real break from serious thoughts. I decided this was a time to enjoy lighter reads.
The first book I read was called Sarah’s Key. The content itself was based on historical events in WW2 in France, and it was anything but light. The story alternates between a young girl named Sarah in France during WW2, and a present day journalist in France, whose life intersects with Sarah’s family. It was the perfect book to take along. Riveting. Tragic. If you have never heard of the Vel’d'Hiv’ roundup in Paris in 1942, read this book.
The next book I read was Predator by Terri Blackstock (Christian fiction bestselling author). Think of the worst thing that could happen because of too much information given out on a Facebook-type of online social network, and you have the premise of this fictional story. It was a good reminder not to let the whole world know what you are doing and where you are every minute of the day! Privacy settings are there for a reason. The story moved along quite quickly, and had some tense moments! A good, quick beach read. Although, I’m not sure why I chose this one. It’s not like my overactive imagination needs any more fuel!
And finally, I truly enjoyed Limelight by Melody Carlson. I am a fan of her writing, and this book did not disappoint. It wasn’t a grip-the-edge-of-your-seat read by any stretch, but it had its humorous moments (I chuckled out loud a few times) and Carlson certainly does know how to get the reader to care for the characters, no matter how flawed. Claudette is an 80 year old has-been Hollywood actress, who has been pampered her entire life. She’s superficial, insensitive, and selfish, but this all has to change when she finds herself alone and having to move back to her hometown to the little house she grew up in. Again, a quick but enjoyable read, that deals with sensitive, real life issues, and teaches one a thing or two about what really matters. Perfect vacation reading material.
Now that I’m home again, I must finish those bookmarked nonfiction books that have been patiently waiting for me. I remember a time when I hardly read fiction at all. I think things are changing.
A friend gave me Sarah's Key and it is sitting in my "to read" pile of books. Too many books, not enough time.
ReplyDeleteAll of those books sound really interesting.
