As December ends, everyone seems to be coming out of the woodwork with talk of New Year’s Resolutions and goal setting. The calendar page will soon be turned and 2011 will become a reality. It seems only natural to think of the words ‘new’, ‘fresh’, and ‘clean slate’. Why is that?
I think that we all somehow want something more or better out of life than we already have, even if what we have is pretty darn good! Who doesn’t want more joy? peace? patience? money? education? family time? better health? improved relationships? a closer walk with God? More clarity for the future? How many of us have arrived?
I think God puts that desire for change inside us. Yes, we can be content with what we have in our present moment, but at the same time, deep inside we know we were made for something MORE.
It reminds me of something C.S. Lewis once said: "If I find in myself desires which nothing in this earth can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world". I think that’s one of the reasons why we strive for something better in this world, be it physically, emotionally, spiritually, or whatever. We are just wired that way.
And for some, making New Year’s Resolutions is a way to begin initiating change.
While I was browsing a few blogs in my Google Reader, this post title caught my eye: “What Will Change This Year?” (worth reading, by the way!)
Yes, a lot can change in a year.
There is hope for the New Year.
No matter if it will be a frustratingly challenging year or one full of serendipities, ultimately (and thankfully) God is in it with us. And He is good.
I love times of new beginnings, such as New Year's or the start of another school year. Ahh, resolutions to make, resolutions to break!
