It wasn’t that long ago when the word ‘blog’ meant nothing. If you told someone you were a blogger, they would look at you sideways, with raised eyebrows. Personal blogging began about 1994 , but didn’t really catch on full tilt till about 1999 (My baby was 9 years old by then!). I began blogging in August 2005. Today there are over 112,000,000 blogs!
That means I had children when blogging was non existent. I kept journals, but I’m a random , fickle journaler. I know that I would have LOVED to have kept a blog chronicling my life as a young mom having babies. There are so many stories to tell when you have young children. Almost everything they say and do is entertaining. It’s just a great way to keep track of special moments and events. Much nicer than a lined notebook, because pictures can be included with a few clicks of a mouse. And memories can be shared just as quickly.
I was looking through my journals the other day, trying to find some interesting info to share at the wedding 0f my son. I found a few choice anecdotes. But I’m sure if I had been blogging, there would have been so much more.
Of course, blogging will never really take the place of private journaling. Most blogs are there for the world to read, and choices must always be made about what or what not to publish. With a journal, the mind can think freely and a pen in hand can transfer those thoughts onto paper. There is no concern about what others may think or if others may be offended.
As wonderful as blogging is, I don’t think pen and paper will ever be history. Do you?
There's just something special about a private journal. But I find that I can't write as fast as my thoughts come to me so I have a private journal that I type up on my computer.
ReplyDeletePen and paper might not ever be history, but I do think they have taken permanent second place. In Korea I wanted to write a short essay and was shocked to find that when I attempted it with pen and paper it just didn't flow as easily as if I was typing on my computer.
ReplyDeleteNot for me. Ink is a basic necessity of life!
