When a publication ban is lifted, I know it’s time to quit watching the news, listening to radio news, or reading the paper. Not that I watch TV news or read the daily paper much anymore. These days I get most of what I want to know from websites, or through favorite online sites or specific magazines I subscribe to.
But when on holidays or away from home, with a TV sitting right in front of me or driving long distances with the radio turned on, I do find myself following more current events.
And that’s a scary thing when a publication ban on a horrendous crime story is lifted.
My question is: Who really needs to know the gory details? What benefit is that to anyone? I change the channel or station and I avert my eyes from the newspaper column. I think of younger people (or anyone, for that matter) who read or hear the details. It’s not healthy and totally unnecessary, as far as I’m concerned. I know there are arguments that the public has a right to know. But how about the right NOT to know, for the preservation of our precious minds?
Just a little rant there…
This doesn't have anything to do with your blog post, but I believe it is your Anniversary my dear friend! Snagged Liz's computer for a few minutes and caught up on your blog. So Happy Anniversary you Lovebirds. =) Hope you get to celebrate!
ReplyDeleteI have no idea what you're talking about since I'm pretty media-sheltered (self-imposed). But I sort of have a feeling from your rant that my cluelessness is a good thing.
