A Little Celebration

Flowers $500,000.

Cake $10,ooo

I was reading an article on Chelsea Clinton’s upcoming wedding, the estimated cost to be between $3 and $5 million dollars!!

Did you know that the average cost of a Canadian wedding these days is between $20 and $30K? Definitely not a cheap event!

And who pays for this? According to Weddingbells Magazine (Canadian), nearly half the couples foot the bill, 32% rely on family contributions, and 14% take out loans… I guess that’s besides maxing out credit cards.

A wedding is hopefully a once-in-a-lifetime experience celebrating a wonderful event, so I think that it is worthy of a great celebration. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it should take the couple years to pay it off. Meaningful, memorable, and enjoyable is what’s important… whether it’s a backyard wedding or an extravaganza.

If you could do your wedding day all over again, would you spend more or less?

  1. Our wedding was cheap. My husband bought my dress which was on sale and just over $200. My parents footed the flower bill, which was the most costly of anything we paid, at around $300. I got the cake/groom's cake at a bakery at around $30 or so for both. Remember these prices were from 27 years ago! :) Church was free since we were members. Not sure the cost of the rehearsal dinner since in-laws did that. But, yep, would do it over again, just the same. And, btw, friends/family made the food for the reception.

A homemade wedding in lots of ways.

Scares me when I hear of what churches cost now. Even for members...it costs. Didn't used to be that way.

  2. If I could do our wedding day over again I'd spend less and it would be way smaller & more intimate.

  3. An excellent thought question and one that has me pondering the deep recesses of my mind. Too many thoughts are being conjured up for a simple answer here but perhaps prompting an article in the process for one of my blog posts; therefore an encouragement message for the brides-to-be granddaughters! Thank you from a bride of 52+ years past...M. Sue
