BE it resolved... to set SMART goals

You might be thinking I've posted a lot today, but actually I had written the other posts a few days ago, and didn't even realize both of them were scheduled for today.. oh well..

It's New Year's Eve and many thoughts turn to making resolutions. Some love to make 'em and some love to hate 'em. And for good reason!

In order for success in goal achievement, goals have to be SMART. So, when you start making NYR's, you may want to ask yourself if they are achievable..
S. = Specific, M. = Measurable, A. = Attainable, R. = Realistic and T. = Timely.

So, let's see how I did with my last year's NYR's...

1. Run 10km in the Vancouver Sun Run - specific, measurable, attainable, realistic (although it didn't seem so in January 2009!), and timely. ACCOMPLISHED!

2. Read (or listen to) the entire Bible this year. I used the www.dailyaudiobible.com  - it was specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. . ACCOMPLISHED!

3. Become kinder - in words and deeds. Less selfish, More grateful, less worried. Enjoy life more. Well... specific - no; measurable - no; attainable - yes; realistic - yes, and timely- no...so generally, this was NOT ACCOMPLISHED, except for the 'be more grateful' because I actually did do something specific in that regard. Am I more grateful or aware of being grateful? Either way, I think I've improved there.

4. Set goals... too general, I believe. Yes, I did set goals, but it didn't help me be more productive, because I now realize it's the steps I need to take to achieve those goals that I need to focus on. In other words, this was not a SMART goal! So, NOT ACCOMPLISHED.

So, it looks like SMART goals are the way to go, if you're going to make the effort to make resolutions this year. I hope you achieve yours in 2010!

  1. Yeah but could you be kinder?
    I think #1 and #2 were pretty impressive in themselves.
    (And I'd probably just buy a bigger basket - that's a pretty funny caption)
    Happy New Year!
