This is a part of a sermon preached by G. Campbell Morgan on March 3, 1916, called “The Fixed Heart in the Day of Frightfulness”.
“..The fixed heart is the secret of courage. Courage is an affair of the heart; courage is the consciousness of the heart that is fixed… What, then, shall we do in the day of frightfulness? We shall do our duty; the thing that is nearest; the thing we have to do tomorrow morning. We will do that, and do it well; and do it cheerfully…What this nation needs, now just as much, and perhaps more, than anything else, is the multiplication of strong, quiet souls who are not afraid of evil tidings, even the the zeppelins may be coming, and will not add to the panic that demoralizes, but will do their work.”
Interestingly, I heard these same thoughts from an interview with a young soldier in Afghanistan on the radio today.
I thought this was an apt excerpt for a day like today, when we remember those who have fought so that we can live in freedom in this country. As well, it’s a reminder for us not to panic in the face of bad news, hard times, or fear mongering, but to keep on keeping on..being strong and courageous.
Really powerful words.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what it is about this particular Remebrance day, but I have teared up over it all a few times.
