I will never look the same way at raw chicken on a cutting board again. I will look with trepidation, rather than forward to a tasty dish. Why? Well yesterday, my experience went like so:
Slice, slice, slice the half frozen chicken breast .... throw into pan .... stir..... chop slice chop slice chop.... throw into pan.....stir...... throw into pan... stir..... press garlic cloves into pan... stir... (mind starts wandering due to monotony of task... mind not on task...) slice, slice.. knife slips... . Aaiewwwowww!!!!!!!!!!!! drop knife, stare at middle finger of left hand, turn on tap, run cold water over finger as it oozes waves of red liquid, notice flap of skin on finger....
Daughter runs into kitchen, genuinely concerned. (heartwarming, really). Rips up cotton rag for me and grabs the medical supply container. Neither of us has the stomach for this sort of thing-- we were not created to be nurses, that's for sure! She fared better than I did, keeping calm and daring to look closely at the damage when I really didn't want to see what it looked like.
How did this happen? I was rushing through a task that requires care and FULL attention. It really could have been worse had I been wildly chopping, with arm raised high each time. But I was doing the slice/chop thing, so thankfully, I did not lose a finger tip or nail. As you can see in the picture, 2 fingers were involved in the incident. One just barely.
My first thought after this happened was "I do NOT want to go to Emergency and wait 8 hours". That's usually my first thought. The hassle of getting medical help is foremost on my mind. Am I alone here?
Anyway, it's not too bad, after all. It's probably the worst finger cut I've ever had, a little discolored and my hand throbbed for a while. But not life threatening or even stitch requiring (my diagnosis, though).
Today, it's wrapped nicely and I can type again!!
Awwwwww. Sucky!
ReplyDeleteI have to say that you and Jill have a scary trend going on. Maybe you should just buy pre-chopped ingredients from the store.

Ouch! Hope it heals quickly.
ReplyDeleteNone of that allowed on Thursday!!
ReplyDeleteFrom time to time I go "food network" complete with attempts to chop, cut and dice like the experts... well, I've found that I'm not an expert...the hard way...:) Really great post...

I'm just glad you didn't cut off your finger, because I definitely wouldn't have had the stomach to wrap it in ice and save it or something.
ReplyDeleteThanks, john, for visiting my blog!
