Telling Stories

Each of our lives tells a story. How good we want that story to be is up to us.

I’ve just finished reading Donald Miller’s A Million Miles in a Thousand Years. At first, it seemed like an interesting, but rather random  sort of book, but as I continued  it became more provocative.. it really made me think. It’s a book that is both simple and deep. It made me realize that the elements that make a good story are the same ones that make a good life… a life with meaning and fulfillment.

A few quotes that resonated with me:

“When something hard happens to you, you have two choices in how to deal with it. You can either get bitter or better. I chose to get better. It’s made all the difference.”

“..much of our lives are spent trying to avoid conflict. Half the commercials on television are selling us something that will make life easier. Part of me wonders if our stories aren’t being stolen by the easy life.”

“..about writers not really wanting to write. We have to force ourselves to create these scenes. We have to get up off the couch and turn the television off.. “

In writing or telling a stories, the best ones don’t come easy. It’s a lot of hard work. Just like our life stories.  It takes conflict, determination, tragedy, and sacrifice for a story to be great.

This book made me want to write a better story.

  3. oooh oooh oooh
Donald Miller is hosting a weekend-long seminar based on the book in Portland later this month. Oh how I wish I could go.
In fact, if there was anyone else that might like to go, I might be able to wrangle my way into it.
But only if somebody else really wanted to go.
    :-)
