Full Original Serenity Prayer
by Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971)
God, give us grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right,
If I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next.
Amen.
Do you think we are able be more than ‘reasonably’ happy in this life? Do you think we should aim to be?
I personally have always felt that CONTENT would be a better word there. I am not so sure about happy but I definitely think we can be content - no matter what - as we surrender to Him and accept the things that cannot be changed. - Not saying that any of it is EASY!!
ReplyDeleteI am WAY more than just reasonably happy in this life so yes, it is possible. :)
ReplyDeletePhilosophy student that I am, I know that many belief systems of people through all ages and cultures believe that happiness is the goal of human life. Everytime I come across the idea, I feel stongly that there is a point being missed. Happiness can't be the goal. It is so fleeting. And different people reach it by different methods - some down right horrifying. So no. I don't think so.
